Unbreakable is a sorely underrated superhero movie, possibly because it’s less about the heroics and more about the emotional struggles of a family. Unfortunately, before we could get a sequel, M. Night Shyamalan decided to make movies about Mark Wahlberg fighting plants and how he’s a magical artist that critics don’t understand. But that won’t stop him from making a TV series out of Unbreakable, right?
Shyamalan has been promoting Wayward Pines and, inevitably, he gets asked about Unbreakable. Here’s what he’s had to say about it this time:
“As a way continue the story, yes. That would [interest me],” the director said. “I really love where we are. Could you do a six-episode Unbreakable series on Netflix or HBO? Yeah! That’s cool. I even had an idea of doing a story that goes in one form, and a second part that’s in another form, and a third one’s in a different form. You never do the same form. It would be like, movie, then, let’s say, cable, to TV, whatever, and then a play; it goes straight online, and it finishes like that.
It’s not as unlikely as you might think. Unbreakable, after all, is a Disney property, and Disney is tight with Netflix; you can actually stream the original movie off the service right now. Although, one does have to wonder what the show would be like with a cast switch, being that it doesn’t seem likely Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson will check in for a second round at this point. Still, we’ll take it over turning The Village into a series.
