We’ve officially got a new Spider-Man on the way, which is either a blessing, or some manner of a curse akin to the worst kind of disease imaginable. It’s only fitting to be so dramatic considering the new Spider-Man film will return the character to high school and put him through the ringer of balancing his scholastic activities, his personal life, and the super-heroics he’s going to have to accomplish with his powers.
Kevin Fiege sat down with Birth.Movies.Death to discuss this return to youth for the web-slinger, and pointed out that Peter Park’s return to high school has a significant influence in the classic youthful films of John Hughes:
“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” said Feige. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”
Feige also talked a bit about what we can expect from the film in terms of villains and stakes, noting that Parker’s age and the feelings he sometimes has as a teenager can feel like as much of a life and death struggle as saving the world. The Marvel president and super-producer also notes that the film will utilize fresh villains and ditch overused characters like Green Goblin for a deeper look into the character’s rogues gallery.
So that means Hobgoblin then, right? Boosh.
