‘The Flash’ Taps Tony Todd To Voice DC Villain Zoom In Season Two

After the first season of The Flash, many fans have wondered and speculated how the CW will one up themselves with the upcoming new episodes. We already know Jay Garrick will make an appearance in the new season and new heroes and villains will be introduced as well. DC villain Zoom was first referenced in the show’s Comic-Con trailer and now Variety has the exclusive that horror movie favorite Tony Todd — best known for his roles in the Candyman and Final Destination movies — will be lending his voice to the season’s big bad.

In season one, the series simply modulated Tom Cavanagh’s voice to enhance the evil character that was Reverse-Flash. According to executive producer Andrew Kriesberg, they wanted to add more mystery to who was underneath the Zoom outfit this time around by doing “something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader.” So this time around, they’ve tapped an iconic voice to portray this year’s “speeddemon” and as Kriesberg states, “no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.”

As for the mystery of Zoom’s identity, Kreisberg said — unlike last season’s quick Reverse-Flash reveal — this time around the show will be drawing out the ongoing question of who indeed is under the mask. Further, the executive producer teased a bit about Zoom’s driving force in the upcoming season:

“For us, the best villains are the ones who don’t have megalomaniacal ‘I want to rule the world’ motivations. Last year, the Reverse-Flash had a very simple goal which was ‘I just want to go home, and if people need to die or cities need to get wasted for me to get that, so be it.’ And Zoom has a very similar, personal goal this season… simple and easy to understand, and very primal. And just as with Wells last year, Zoom doesn’t care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal.”

And for you comic book nerds out there who think they know Zoom’s true identity, pay attention! Kreisberg points out the need “to service the entire audience” which includes both diehard fans as well as newcomers to the on-screen story. While he acknowledges the “great deal of respect and reverence for the source material,” he also alludes to a “clever way to spin the tale” for this season’s story which will keep it new and exciting for both those who know what may be coming and those who “are just enjoying the show on its own terms.”

The Flash will return to the CW on Oct. 6 with Zoom making his first appearance in episode two of the new season, titled, “Flash of Two Worlds.”
