Five Games: ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

PCs, handhelds, mobile, console, indies, triple A, free-to-play — the gaming scene gets more diverse and difficult to follow by the day, but thankfully I’m here every week to guide you through what’s happening with games.

As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Adorable Platformer

Yoshi’s Woolly World (Wii U, Oct. 16)

Mario’s pal Yoshi is pretty adorable to begin with, and then Nintendo had to go and turn him into a little stuffed yarn dino. Besides being achingly cute, Yoshi’s Woolly World looks like a damn solid and surprisingly involving little 2D platformer from the masters of the genre.

This Week’s Hack ‘n’ Slash Game

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below (PS4, Oct. 13)

Yes, that is actually this game’s name. I’m not sure if Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below is the longest video game title ever, but it’s gotta be in the running. The game itself is essentially a Dragon Quest-themed version of Dynasty Warriors. So yeah, very niche stuff, but the game’s polish and production values look pretty impressive.

This Week’s Strategy Game

Rogue State (PC, Oct. 16)

Here’s an interesting premise – in Rogue State you take control of a fictional Middle Eastern country that’s just undergone a revolution. Which direction will you take your fragile nation in? How will you manage your affairs with your neighbors? Can you keep the Americans off your back? Rogue State is a strategy game that’s not afraid to wade into some edgy territory. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Handheld RPG

The Legend of Legacy (3DS, Oct. 13)

Made by developers who previously worked on the SaGa series, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, The Legend of Legacy is a tasty slice of Japanese RPG goodness. Interestingly, unlike most JRPGs, The Legend of Legacy casts aside linear progression in favor of a much more open world approach. Old school RPG fans ought to have this one on their radars.

Pick of the Week

Minecraft: Story Mode – Episode 1 (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 & Wii U, Oct. 13)

Minecraft takes a break from the mining and crafting to weave an epic yarn in Minecraft: Story Mode. Developed by Telltale Games, this is more of a traditional adventure game than most of their recent titles, with an emphasis on lighthearted storytelling, and puzzle solving. The game looks surprisingly good, and has an all-star voice cast featuring everybody from Patton Oswalt to Pee-Wee Herman. Even if you’re not into Minecraft, this one might be worth a look.

A somewhat light week before things really go crazy in late October. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
