Comics Of Note, Ranked, For July 22

It’s Wednesday, and thus new comic day! Once again, we’ve got the rankings of the most notable books on the stands, from Archie fighting sharks to Archie fighting Predators to books that don’t feature Archie, but do feature fighting! Who took the No. 1?

As always, a reminder this column is oriented towards the casual reader; it’s ranked on accessibility first, quality and your humble critic’s personal opinion second. A low-ranked book may not be bad, it just may not have much to offer anybody who didn’t grow up reading comics. With that in mind, let’s look at the rankings!

1) Wolf #1

Antoine Wolfe starts this book off in a straightjacket, on fire, and amusing himself by singing Robert Johnson songs. Ales Kot’s script has a lot of wonderful little details, from deadbeat fiends speaking in alliteration to Wolfe’s annoyance with racists. That said, the final splash page has a groaner of a pun, and Matt Taylor’s general refusal to draw backgrounds or add many details can make the book feel flat in places. Overall, though, this is sixty pages of well-done paranormal detective work.

2) The Book of Death: The Fall of Bloodshot

Any comic book fan is a sucker for stories where a superhero meets their ultimate end. But Jeff Lemire and Doug Braithwaite take this to every possible ridiculous place you might expect… before ending it in a way you won’t see coming and will hit you right in the feelings. An unexpectedly beautiful one-shot, and one worth getting, even if you don’t follow Valiant.

3) Mind MGMT #35

The penultimate issue of Matt Kindt’s magical realist espionage thriller is arguably one of the best issues of the whole run. Kindt’s relentless desire to tear down and rebuild layout meshes perfectly with his script and its mix of action and metaphor. In other words, Kindt’s pulled out the stops for the finale, and it’s a near-perfect comic.

4) C.O.W.L. #11

This story of a ’60s superhero union in Chicago ends right when it was getting good, and with a killer sequel hook, no less. Hopefully Kyle Higgins and Rod Reis will come back to their story at some point, but at least they close out on a finale worth reading.

5) Ivar, Timewalker #7

Fred Van Lente and Francis Portela continue their interstellar, time-hopping farce. And it’s a hoot, not least because Van Lente can not only write a joke about how Newton’s Laws affect barfing in space, but also because Portela can make it hilarious and disgusting at the same time. As you might guess, highly recommended.

6) Grayson #10

I admit, I was skeptical of Dick Grayson as a superspy, but Tim Seeley and Tom King write a great superspy story, and Mikel Janin knows just how to make it eye candy. Increasingly it’s becoming Archer, But At Least Mildly More Serious, and you know what? That’s a niche we need filled.

7) Insufferable #3

The battle between Galahad and Nocturnus (i.e. Robin and Batman) continues in Mark Waid and Peter Krause’s sharp, funny book. Galahad is a complete dick, here, but what’s nice about this book is his dickery makes sense. His father betrayed him, his mother is dead, and he’s stuck, emotionally. Of course that doesn’t excuse his screwing up, but it’s fun to watch.

8) Archie vs. Predator #4

All I’m going to say is that this miniseries, already bizarre beyond all reason, ends on the single most warped note of any comic book you read this week. Seriously. You won’t see it coming, no matter how effective Alex de Campi is at mixing Archie’s pratfalls and Predator violence. I laughed, though, so I have to recommend it.

9) Gotham By Midnight #7

Juan Ferreyra and Ray Fawkes once again prove they’re a great creative team. Ferreyra’s clever layout work meshes well with Fawkes’ well-done script, creating an engaging book that’s a bit short on scares relative to other efforts, but rich in character and fascinating for it. Definitely worth a look for horror and fantasy fans.

10) Sons of the Devil #3

Travis, one of the titular sons of the devil, starts getting some answers this issue, which is mostly about how Travis is a mess. My main issue with Brian Buccellato’s script is that this book is clearly written for the trade; that doesn’t make it less compelling, but it does stretch things out a little bit. Toni Infante’s art is uniquely suited to the story, though, making for an excellent mood and an eye-catching read.

11) We Are Robin #2

The idea of a team of Robins, essentially Robins as a heroic teenage gang, comes into focus a bit with this second issue. It still feels a little focus-grouped, as a book, but Lee Bermejo introduces enough mystery here, and gives Jorge Corona and Rob Haynes enough action scenes to give things a kinetic feeling so the book gains some momentum. If it explores its concept and gives it some twists, it could be one of the best books DC puts out.

12) Five Ghosts #17

Frank Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham really love pulpy adventure, and this book is just that, straight, no chaser. In both style and tone, it actually feels quite a bit like an ’80s European adventure comic, and that’s no bad thing.

13) Power Up #1

Kate Leth and Matt Cummings ask what would happen if all those ridiculous prophecies that give the powers of space to adorable children in manga were based on flawed math. In this case, it gives the power of the cosmos to a stay-at-home mom, a construction worker, a 23-year-old pet store employee, and a goldfish. The concept is a hoot, but truthfully, this issue is dragged out a little bit, plot-wise, and the characters feel more like types than people as a result. Similarly, Cummings’ simple, cartoony art doesn’t help matters, although it’s apt for the material. Still, a solid start, and certain funny enough to be worth a look.

14) Cyborg #1

David Walker, writer of Dynamite’s superb Shaft, needs to be allowed to write on this book. Cyborg’s latest solo book is solid, but while Walker has a pretty engaging take on a man struggling with his father’s emotional distance, it’s just not his best. Hopefully he’s let loose, preferably in the second issue.

15) Archie vs. Sharknado

This is less successful than this week’s other gory Archie crossover, and who ever thought they’d type that sentence, mostly because it doesn’t quite meld the two successfully. On the other hand, it is exactly as amusingly terrible as the concept sounds, so if you want a gory laugh, this will fit the bill.

16) Fight Club 2 #3

As this book steps further away from just repeating the original, and shows us just how far Tyler has truly gone, it’s beginning to come into focus as its own story. It helps that Cameron Stewart is allowed to be a bit more playful and focused with his art. In short, it’s becoming its own story, and becoming more interesting to read as a result.

17) Justice League 3001 #2

Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Howard Porter basically deliver Justice League International IN SPAAAAACE. Not that I’m complaining, because I grew up reading that book, and Giffen and DeMatteis’ irreverent mockery of superhero and SF tropes carries the book, especially now that they’ve been freed of continuity. That said, this is the kind of book where they throw everything at the wall and hope it sticks; they happen to get lucky that more of it sticks than falls off. Still, as long as they’ll dish out the jokes, DC fans should keep showing up.

18) Sinestro #13

Cullen Bunn has a great concept that his script lmost entirely ignores: With the Green Lanterns removed from the universe, somebody has to police the galaxy… and Sinestro, of course, knows just who’s right for the job. It’s still a book that could use a reason to be around, although Brad Walker and Drew Hennessy deliver art that’s almost worth it on its own. But it’s improving, and it’s good to see DC giving its supervillains some depth.

19) Sons of Anarchy #23

This new storyline takes place between seasons one and two, so it’s not exactly tense when somebody’s life is threatened. But SAMCRO going up against the Irish mob is an entertaining premise, and if you miss the show, this will fill that particular need.

20) The Flash #42

Henry Allen has broken out of jail. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean much when Professor Zoom is messing with you, as he learns the hard way. Robert Venditti’s story is engaging and fun, but Brett Booth’s pencils feels a bit disconnected from the plot, almost as if the art were drawn first and the script rewritten just enough afterwards. Still, a fun read with some clever ideas, and worth a look for Flash fans.

21) Prez #2

While this second issue dials back the wackiness that dragged down the first, it still feels a bit rote as a satire, especially when it cribs from other satires like Putney Swope for plot twists. “Haw haw the serious politicians are acting like teenager girls!” Come on, really? Ben Caldwell and Mark Morales do an excellent job with the art, but Mark Russell’s script needs to dial back the attempts at satire and start exploring its ideas; consider that mostly what we know about our heroine is that she’s the accidental star of a viral video and her father is dead. Russell demonstrates, about halfway through this book, that he’s capable of a lot more, and it’d be nice to see that in the book.

22) Burning Fields #6

While this book’s conceit, combining the pulp concept of colonialists unearthing an ancient people the locals knew better than to antagonize with the current and extremely ugly political situation in Iraq, is killer, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. This book hits every beat you’d expect from the idea and doesn’t really do much with its setting. It feels like the cheap B-movie Hollywood would make out of an edgy comic book. It’s certainly a fun enough read if you want a horror/action yarn, but you wish it’d deliver more than just a few platitudes.

23) Teen Titans #10

The fight over Superboy continues and… eh. The book makes a big deal over how the team is divided, but we just don’t know anybody here well enough to get invested. Fun, but slight.

24) Harley Quinn and Power Girl #2

Oh, good, Harley and Kara are trapped on a planet inspired by ’70s stereotypes. Because that’s what a book full of ditz jokes needed: Disco jokes. Oh, and also gay jokes that aren’t particularly homophobic, but still feel awkward, somehow, like we’re sorta supposed to be laughing at Vartox’s one gay lover, but not because he’s gay! Just… because he’s whiny? Sorta? This book is serviceable enough, but the “wackiness” is so forced it hurts. At least that Stephane Roux can draw, right?

25) ’68: Last Rites #1

I’d love to tell you this book has any sort of hook to it, but beyond the date it’s set in, there’s nothing, to be honest. If you like zombie books, this will be money well spent.

26) Deathstroke #8

Mostly this book tries to establish that Deathstroke can take on the God of War, namely Wonder Woman, and not get turned into paste. To be honest, I’m not sure I buy it, but at least Wondy has a valid reason for whaling on Slade, and that makes it better than Wondy’s own book this week.

27) The Blacklist #1

If you like the show, you’ll like the comic of The Blacklist, as they’re essentially the same thing. Considering the current issues of police brutality and coverups, though, Nicole Phillips’ script is in questionable taste, at best, only reinforced by Beni Lobel’s competent but unimaginative art and layouts. It’s a solid enough thriller, but perhaps future issues could be a bit more thoughtful.

28) Aquaman #42

I’ve got to ask… what happened? Trevor McCarthy is credited with “layouts” here, and his work is finished by himself and two other artists. It gets distracting, fast, as the art can’t keep a consistent tone. It’s a shame as Cullen Bunn’s script, about Aquaman trying to save refugees from an alternate reality while trying to keep their world from destroying his, is a great idea, but the tone just doesn’t sync up. Worth a read, but maybe give it a flip, first.

29) Wonder Woman #42

It’s really a bad sign when a major character threatens to kill herself and your first thought is “Good, it might speed this book up a bit.” Leaving aside the bit of forced theatrics featuring Wondy beating on a sleazebag in the club, most of this book is just Wondy and the cast standing around talking, which is as dull as it sounds. Hey, at least Deathstroke has a decent Wondy fight this week.
