Paul Feig Hints That Kate McKinnon’s ‘Ghostbusters’ Character Is A Lesbian

After months of polite discussion on the internet, Ghostbusters finally hits theaters this weekend. And there is, in the trailers, much drooling over Chris Hemsworth. But one member of the cast may not be particularly interested in his saxophone pics, at least according to director Paul Feig.

During an interview with the Daily Beast, Feig is asked about Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) and her flirty behavior with Erin. But apparently it’s up to the audience:

But while McKinnon is SNL’s first openly lesbian cast member, Ghostbusters offers only hints on Holtzmann, who spends her free time shamelessly flirting with Erin. I ask Feig: Is Holtzmann gay?

He pauses, smiling. “What do you think?”

He goes on to clarify a little bit, and more or less pass the ball to McKinnon on the question:

I wasn’t like, ‘And now you should wink at them.’ This is stuff that is coming out of Kate! That’s why you connect with those characters. They’re playing versions of themselves. That’s what makes a comedic actor fantastic, when that personality comes out.

So we guess somebody will have to ask McKinnon about it. But, then again, it wouldn’t be out of line with the original movie, since the entire plot more or less revolved around Bill Murray trying to charm his way into Sigourney Weaver’s pants, and there’s, uh, that scene with Dan Aykroyd. You know the one we’re talking about. Being a Ghostbuster can be flirty work, folks.
