Let’s Break Down The ‘Ghostbusters’ Trailer

The new Ghostbusters trailer has finally arrived, and with it a lot of answers to many questions. So, let’s break down what we’ve found inside the trailer, and what it might hint about in the actual movie.

The History

This trailer kicks off by seeming to imply this takes place well after the last two movies, right down to showing the classic firehouse distinctly lacking Ghostbusters regalia. Wherever the original ‘Busters may be, it’s clear they’ve moved on, and that New York City hasn’t had any fear of ghosts for three solid decades. Of course…

The Team

…That doesn’t mean people aren’t carrying the torch. Notice the team appears to be starting from scratch, here, with nary a PKE meter or a proton pack in sight.

In what appears to be the opening of the movie, there are clever echoes of both its predecessors. Notice that they’re in a library of sorts, and the ghost in front of them is clearly the woman in the painting behind them. Maybe Vigo will have a girlfriend?

Okay, maybe not. But, hey, ghosts gotta slime.

There are also a few other possible shout-outs, here and there. That looks a bit like 55 Central Park, better known as Gozer’s hangout, in the mural in this shot, not to mention that it resembles the ghosts entering the real world in the first movie.

And, of course, there’s Slimer.

Meet Leslie Jones

Jones’ character is more important than the trailer implies. She’s a historian, which is what she means when she says she knows New York. Considering that the ghosts in the movie tend to be drawn from recent history, that will likely be crucial to the plot.

And, of course, she provides the new, hopefully improved, Ecto-1. Let’s just take a moment and enjoy that reveal, shall we?

The Gear

We get a look at the classic proton pack almost immediately, and the classic capture stream shows up, as well. But the gear has been given a fairly substantial upgrade.

Like the trap, which is now a bear trap made of lasers.

And now there are proton pistols and brass knuckles.

The Villain

Not really discussed is our villain, although we do know that whoever it is, they’re building something to increase paranormal activity. Considering that the original team might be a part of history in this movie, one wonders if the accidentally leaked villain might echo that. They also seem to send ghosts after our heroes; Chris Hemsworth proves the Lego set accurate, but the trailer spends most of its time with creepy, possessed Melissa McCarthy.

That said, exorcism appears to be unusually easy in the Ghostbusters universe.

Indeed. We’ll see just how powerful Patty is July 15.
