There Will Not Be A ‘Pokemon-Style’ ‘Harry Potter Go’ Game

*UPDATE*

There will not be a Harry Potter Go-style game. While we all hope to visit Harry’s wizarding world, it seems as if the only way you’ll be able to that is by visiting the theme park or using your imagination. The article cited here was unfortunately based on a hoax website that posted a fake source.

Unless you’re living under the only rock in the country that someone hasn’t already turned over to make sure it’s not hiding a Gyarados, you’re aware of Pokemon Go, the wildly popular mobile phone game that has taken most of the world by storm since its release earlier this month. The game uses GPS technology to simulate Pokemon in our world that users can catch, collect, train, and evolve. It’s made the news for a multitude of reasons, some good and some slightly less good. It’s so popular, in fact, that it’s already inspiring other media properties to utilize the same platform for games of their own. The first to do so? None other than one of the most popular franchises of all time: Harry Potter.

First things first: This is no knockoff. The game is being developed by Niantic, the company that created Pokemon Go. Suggestions that they give the property a shot have been flying left and right and they’ve officially taken the bait. There are few details available besides the fact that yes, the game is officially happening. What primarily remains to be seen is what the game itself will entail. The world of Harry Potter isn’t quite as straightforward as Pokemon’s “Gotta Catch ‘Em All’ simplicity. Perhaps it will see users hunting creatures featured in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, or perhaps it will take an entirely new route. Regardless, Pokemon Go got an entire generation to go outdoors, exercise, and make new friends. Hopefully Harry Potter Go will have the same effect.
