Marvel’s Jessica Jones proved to be a solid hit for Netflix when it originally aired last fall and it wound up earning itself a Webby and a Peabody award. Not too shabby.
The show’s star, Krysten Ritter, dropped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss the program and her role and was surprised when Colbert informed her of Iron-Man 3 (and The Nice Guys) director Shane Black’s disclosure on this very internet site last week that the superhero movie’s villain was originally a woman but changed to a man because a Marvel marketing executive said “we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female.”
It’s pretty ridiculous. And Ritter, who’d not heard this news (side note: c’mon, Krysten, read more Uproxx!), agreed. “Really?” she wondered with a high level of incredulity when Colbert told her. But the money line came just a moment later when she exclaimed, “Girls can sell toys!” much to the delight of The Late Show audience.
Colbert agreed and asked her if there is a Jessica Jones toy. “I don’t know if there is yet but there should be and I bet it would sell huge,” Ritter replied. “I’m gonna make some phone calls after this.”
Hopefully she really did if for no other reason than to express to someone in the toy department at Marvel that whoever came up with that Iron-Man 3 decision is an idiot.
