A New ‘Ghostbusters’ Cartoon Might Realize Dan Ackroyd’s Original Script

The original Ghostbusters script was a very, very different movie. It featured “ghostsmashers” as the blue-collar workers of the future, traveling through time, space, and alternate realities with magic wands and riot gear to defeat giant ghosts like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. Needless to say, it got heavily rewritten, both due to the financial impracticalities at the time and the tragic death of John Belushi, whom the script was largely built around. But we may still see just what Dan Ackroyd intended, if the plot of a new cartoon is any indication.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed Ivan Reitman, director of the original movie, is behind the show, and it sounds quite a bit like the original screenplay. Set in 2050, it follows a professional team of Ghostbusters as they travel around the world, getting help from local Ghostbuster franchises as they deal with various supernatural threats. We supposedly won’t see members of either the classic team or the new team coming to theaters this July, but we won’t be surprised if both turn up somehow. If nothing else, it’s not like Slimer is going to decide he’s too old for this ectoplasm.

Of course, it’s also got the nostalgia factor to deal with. The Real Ghostbusters was so beloved, Ecto Cooler stayed on the shelves well after it went off the air, and the show’s still got a fanbase that rivals the movie all these years later. But a fresh take on an idea is always welcome, and we’ll see what future ‘busters will be up to in 2018.
