Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Announces Casting For A Major Spoiler Of A Role

Marvel/Netflix

Daredevil has been fairly quiet about its third season on Netflix. But we know a third season in on the way, and that it’s going to involve Matt putting his life back together after the finale of The Defenders. And now the show has cast Joanne Whalley in a major, spoilery role. Spoilers for both Daredevil and The Defenders below.

If you don’t want to be spoiled, and trust us, this is a fairly big glaring spoiler, have a lovely parting GIF:

Poor Danny. Anyway, if you’re still here, at the end of The Defenders, Matt was seemingly dead to the rest of the team, but his bruised, unconscious body was later seen in a convent, and he was being tended to by a nun. To some comic fans, this had echoes of the 1980s story arc Born Again, where Matt Murdock hits rock bottom and comes back to defeat the Kingpin once and for all. In that story, Matt seemingly dies but manages to escape, barely, and winds up at a convent, cared for by a nun named Maggie, which will be Whalley’s role in the third season.

The showrunners could certainly change things up, but in the comics, “Sister Maggie” turns out to be Maggie Murdock. Yes, Matt’s long-lost mother, who was driven to take the vows by severe postpartum depression, turns up. Vincent D’Onofrio, by the way, has been confirmed to return as Wilson Fisk, adding more evidence that this will be a rough season for Matt. Well, rougher than usual, anyway. There’s no release date announced, but if the pattern of releases hold, we’ll see it in late 2018 or early 2019.
