Han Solo is hitting the bench.
Harrison Ford is expected to miss as many as eight weeks of production on “Star Wars: Episode VII” after breaking his ankle on set, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The actor was taken to a hospital on Thursday after being injured by the door of the Millenium Falcon, Solo's prized spacecraft from the original trilogy that will be making a return in the JJ Abrams-directed followup. Production will continue on in his absence and the film is still expected to make its December 18, 2015 release date.
Ford is one of several actors set to reprise his role from the first three “Star Wars” films, a list that also includes Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels. New cast members include John Boyega, Lupita Nyong'o, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Daisy Ridley and Max von Sydow.
“Star Wars: Episode VII” began filming last month in London and Abu Dhabi; the film will be set 30 years after the events of 1983's “Return of the Jedi.” In addition to the new chapter and its sequels, a number of spinoffs are planned including an as-yet-unrevealed one helmed by “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards.
