The ‘Harry Potter’ movie rumor was just that, here’s what’s actually happening

I like to theorize on Harry Potter possibilities as much as the next fan but sadly, we have to put this Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie rumor to rest.

J.K. Rowling and Jack Thorne's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play continues the story of Harry Potter, his friends, his children, and Hogwarts and while we're waiting for the show to start traveling to a city near us, rumor started spreading Warner Bros. was going to turn it into a film. The New York Daily News wrote:

Tinseltown sources say that Warner Bros. is interested in bringing the West End play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” to the silver screen as soon as 2020. Though whether or not the film's 27-year-old star will don his round glasses again is anyone's guess.

They're talking of course about Daniel Radcliffe, the man who played Harry in all eight films. Although he's had some hesitance in the past, now that Radcliffe has put more space between himself and the franchise he's said this year that returning would “depend on the script” and that the “circumstances would have to be pretty extraordinary.” It was basically a no but also a never-say-never kind of situation. Rowling has recently said Cursed Child is likely the last wizarding world story about Harry himself.

But Warner Bros. gave The Huffington Post the following statement on the matter: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage play, with no plans for there to be a film.”

So there you have it. At least for now. Warner Bros. has their hands full with another wizarding world trilogy anyway. The first installment, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is set to be released November 18.
