How Robin Williams Helped A Teenage Co-Star Land A Prom Date

While actor Skyler Gisondo was shooting Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb in May, his friends were back home enjoying their senior year of high school — and asking girls to prom. Gisondo couldn’t be there to ask his prospective date in person, so he used a resource his peers didn’t have at their disposal: his famous co-stars.

Gisondo, who plays Ben Stiller’s son in the film (and will play the son of Christina Applegate and Ed Helms in the upcoming Vacation reboot), asked Stiller and Robin Williams to help him shoot a video asking his lady friend to the dance. He couldn’t have expected Williams and Stiller to go all out.

But they did, prepping for the short video above like it was a vital scene in the movie, even enlisting a rose-carrying monkey for a well-timed cameo. Says the Hollywood Reporter:

“All morning, Robin was pitching more ideas,” Gisondo tells The Hollywood Reporter. He was saying ‘Can I say this? Would it be appropriate to say this?’ You’re Robin Williams. You can say whatever you want!”

The video became more elaborate as Williams and Stiller continued to pitch ideas.

“It turned into this three-minute, ridiculous thing. A prom-posal,” says Gisondo. “I realized that was the most awesome three minutes of my life and I’ve accepted it will go downhill from there.”

Of course he landed the date, a final gift from Williams, whom Gisondo called “a bottomless reservoir of kindness and hilarity” while discussing his time with the late icon: “It was just so special to work so closely with this guy whose movies I’ve grown up with and watch his preparedness and his kindness.”
