‘Black Panther’ Casts Winston Duke As Another Supervillain

Black Panther has a lot, and we mean a lot, of supervillains. Andy Serkis is coming back as Klaw, and Michael B. Jordan will be switching sides to play Killmonger. And you can add another villain to the pile, as Winston Duke is joining as M’Baku, aka Man-Ape.

Yes, that is a profoundly unfortunately name for a supervillain, but he does come by it relatively honestly. M’Baku, a former Wakandan solider frustrated with T’Challa’s rule, joins the White Gorilla clan and takes over, getting superpowers similar to Panther’s in the process and striving to put Wakanda under his heel. Whether Duke (Dominic for you Person of Interest fans) will be playing him as an outright villain or whether M’Baku becomes a villain over the course of the movie remains up in the air, but the latter seems more likely, as Marvel tends to plan for these things and Duke is a relatively late casting announcement.

It does also underscore that this movie is going to take place in and be entirely about Wakanda. Especially with Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze’s excellent, thoughtful comic exploring the troubles of Wakanda, Ryan Coogler has a lot to work with and a great cast to do it with. We’ll see just what he does with it in February 2018.
