Despite a multitude of posters, a great trailer, and general promotional information already being available for the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot (including word of a new video game), there’s still very little known about the film’s villain, played by Neil Casey. Hell, we’ve seen more of their hot new secretary than the bad guy. However, that changed in a recent interview the film’s screenwriter Katie Dippold and CinemaBlend. While Dippold still seems to be keeping the character (whose name is Rowan) mostly under wraps, she revealed a few details that shed a bit of light on what type of antagonist viewers can expect.
“[He’s] a very smart genius type…Rowan is the ultimate loner.” she told the website, “He wants to trap ghosts, but for a different purpose…”. While it’s far from a complete character bio, it at least sheds some light on what the new crew of ‘busters will be dealing with. The original film was, oddly enough, devoid of a concrete, individual antagonist, and the villain of the second was met with…let’s stay mixed reviews. It’ll be interesting to see how Rowan plays out against the new quartet. While his motivations and machinations are still largely a mystery, it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to assume that he’s responsible for the myriad of ghosts running loose in New York City in the trailer.
Dippold also discussed the potential for a Ghostbusters multiverse of sorts. “I think they’re trying to figure out how to connect the old one with this,” she said, “I’d like, if it’s a multiverse, something to base off this universe that we’re going right now.” While it may not be smart to expect a Marvel Cinematic Universe equivalent of Ghostbusters any time soon, based on Dippold’s comments, we could be in for a more expansive Ghostbusters universe within the next few years. And that’s great, because as long as there are Ghostbusters movies, we ain’t afraid of no ghosts.
