George Clooney Calls Political Fundraisers ‘Obscene’ After Hosting Two Political Fundraisers

Just because George Clooney is doing what the law allows doesn’t mean he has to agree with it. Clooney hosted two very high-profile fundraising dinners for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton this weekend, both of which are expected to line her campaign’s pockets with roughly $15 million. That’s a lot of money. An obscene amount, even. And Clooney wants you to know that he thinks so too, even if he’s the one putting the sold out events together.

Clooney went on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday and indeed used that very adjective — obscene — to describe to host Chuck Todd the amount of cash raised. Obviously Clooney supports Clinton in this race. But by taking this position and sharing his opinion on national TV, he is firmly aligned with Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders, on the issue:

“The Sanders campaign, when they talk about it, is absolutely right. It’s ridiculous that we should have this kind of money in politics. I agree completely. I think that, you know, we had some protesters last night when we pulled up in San Francisco and they’re right to protest. They’re absolutely right. It is an obscene amount of money”

The first dinner, which Clooney and his wife Amal hosted, occurred in San Francisco on Friday while the second went down at the couple’s home in L.A. In 2012, Clooney hosted a fundraising event for President Obama which clocked in around that $15 million mark as well.
