'SPARTACUS' LOOKS GOOD

DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK

By / 01.22.10

Sasha Cohen hadn’t skated competitively in four years, and yet she just waltzed right into the US Figure Skating Championships and already is in second place after the short program scores are in. Okay, she didn’t realize waltz in. I think that’s more of a doubles thing, anyway.

Cohen, silver medalist at the Turin Olympics, had not skated competitively since a third place finish at the 2006 world championships but her comeback performance showed the time away had done nothing to dull her considerable charisma or artistry.

With only two Olympic spots on offer, Cohen was considered a long shot to grab a place on the team but now goes into Saturday’s free skate with a chance to book her ticket to next month’s Vancouver Winter Games and capture the women’s crown. –WTAQ, via Reuters.

I discussed this briefly with Dan Levy on his podcast earlier today, the concept of the old vets pushing out some of the up-and-comers trying to make their way into the national spotlight. And honestly, I’d rather rekindle my boner with Cohen than face some sort of legal entanglement in the event 16-year-old Mirai Nagasu makes the team. I have an ankle monitor on each leg as it is. Any more and I’ll have to start buying boot-cut jeans. Panda Img.
