The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones has no plans of overstaying its welcome. The episode count for the HBO smash’s last season has reportedly been made official.

According to Entertainment Weekly, season 8 will feature a limited diet of six episodes. Provided EW‘s sources are correct, that would cap GoT’s pay cable run at an impressive 73 total episodes. The news syncs up nicely with what was said at SXSW in March when series stars Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner and showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss were on a panel at the Austin festival. Consider this the stage where the 6 episode count has gone from “the plan” to “everybody’s super duper official plan.”

Seeing Ian McShane’s favorite “t*ts and dragons” fantasy sensation approach an increasingly more defined finish line is a bit of a bummer, but there’s still another season to savor or hate-watch (whichever’s your preference) before the final run. Season 7 of Game of Thrones is scheduled to premiere on July 16 as part of a seven-episode summer run that’s trimmed down from the usual ten-episode bounty. Still, loads of opportunities for a beloved character or twelve to get brutally slaughtered in a future episode.
