Kiefer Sutherland Really Wanted Jack Bauer To Die On ’24’

Of all the new shows to debut on Fox this fall or next year, 24: Legacy is definitely the one that premieres after Super Bowl LI. The reboot, spinoff, whatever you want to call it stars The Walking Dead and Straight Outta Compton‘s Corey Hawkins as ex-Army Ranger Eric Carter. He’ll race against the clock, literally, to thwart terrorist attacks without help from Jack Bauer.

Fox Television CEO Gary Newman reached out to Kiefer Sutherland about appearing in 24: Legacy, but “it isn’t something he wants to do at this point,” he said. Or any point, considering Sutherland asked producers to kill Bauer. According to 24 showrunner and Homeland co-creator Howard Gordon, “Kiefer actually wanted Jack Bauer to die, and we had many conversations about it… many of us, including his agent, tried to talk him out of it, but then there was an edict from very high up [within Fox] and Jack Bauer is still alive.”

As for whether he’ll return for Legacy, “There’s always a chance he could come back.” There’s also always a chance Sutherland reprises his role as the voice of Bron in The Land Before Time X, but it’s probably not going to happen. He’s too busy being the president, instead of saving him or her.
