‘SNL’ Takes ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos’ To The Dark Places It Deserves

With America’s Funniest Cats, SNL gets a chance to do many things at once with a goofy sketch. First it’s a nice send up of America’s Funniest Home Videos, either the newer version with Tom Bergeron or the classic with Bob Saget. The odd voices, the host who seems about as fun as a wet blanket, and the videos. Oh the videos. You can really see why videos we used to find on AFV are amazing in the Internet age.

But this sketch really excels because of the introduction of the French counterparts, and the dark reality they carry inside. No need for stupid voices and silly sound effects when you’re dealing with reality and mortality. That cat is in its death throes and the ice cream container represents the pointlessness of being. Stupid cats.

It also helps that Cecily Strong and Kate McKinnon are ridiculous as the two French hosts. When you read McKinnon is involved, you half expect it to be her old cat lady character. But then you’re pleasantly surprised by two stuck up French ladies who have no time for “boiyoingyoing.” It’s a high point for dark humor on a show that’s normally pretty straight forward. Plus there’s cats involved.
