‘Zombie Dad’ has two things working against it:
1. It has been uploaded in four parts, which can be difficult to force your attention span through on the Internet, and
2. It is not a 20 second viral video of a guy getting kicked in the balls (but is secretly a Verizon commercial) or whatever.
What is has going for it is HALLOWEEN, and also zombies, and the talented folks in Austin’s musical comedy group Water Park performing a mostly-improv’d musical out of nowhere. They perform at the New Movement Theater down on Lavaca, and trust me, as a guy who couldn’t sit through an episode of ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ and took six months of grumbling to watch Dr. Horrible, I wouldn’t just share any old local comedy thing.
The plot is such: A funeral director is desperate to find love, and his best friend decides to use horrible magic to bring a pretty dead girl’s dad back to life as a guitar playing, kite flying zombie. If that’s not enough to sell you, it features gun violence, people with lights on their fingers and a feel-good singalong. It’s absolutely great, and I had the luxury of being there live, so on the one day a year when zombie humor seems a little less passe I’d like to share it with you.
Devote a little time to your computer screen and check it out.
Go like them on Facebook, and be sure to go see them the next time they perform. The shows are usually free, and they’re doing crazy work for nothing but your love. And while you’re at it, do everything you can to make Megan Simon a huge musical celebrity, because seriously.
