The particulars of this interview with GMO advocate and Monsanto ally Patrick Moore aren’t the most exciting things in the world. Moore sat down with French TV station Canal+ to discuss the ins and outs of golden rice, but soon drifted into the topic of herbicides — particularly glyphosate and its safe ingestion.
The WHO just concluded a massive report that found connections between glphosate and cancer, but Moore declared that it was safe to drink during this interview. He even doubled down, saying he’d drink a glass of the weed killer right there. That’s when Canal’s reporter offered him a glass:
“You can drink a whole quart of it and it won’t hurt you,” he said.
But when the reporter told him that they had prepared a glass and invited Moore to drink it, he refused, saying “I’m not stupid.”
“So, it’s dangerous?” the interviewer asked.
“It’s not dangerous to humans,” Moore replied.
He insisted that people “try to commit suicide” by drinking Roundup but “fail regularly.” Moore then walked out of the interview.
Moore also added in that he was not an idiot, even while still claiming it was safe to drink. He has a point — we’re not going around drinking weed killer straight from the bottle and claiming the taste is refreshing. But when you flat out say you’d drink it during an interview, there is a certain expectation.
I don’t understand why a group of folks like the GMO supporters out there have to be so awkward and combative about their product, especially since it might actually be good for the planet. Then again, if they’re ready to fight for their secrets, do we really want to know what those secrets are? (Probably because it’s soylent green.)
