People have been up in arms lately over the “radical” idea that children should be able to play with whatever type of toy they choose. When Target decided to make their toy section gender-neutral, their Facebook page exploded with angry comments. While the world is slowly becoming more and more progressive, there are still those resistant to change.
However, one dad was put in this very position and handled it with the loving grace of a good parent. Mikki Willis took his son, Azai, to exchange a duplicate birthday gift, and to his surprise, his young son picked an Ariel doll. A lot of dads would have handled this Little Mermaid situation differently, but Willis took it as a moment to extend a message of acceptance to his children.
“I let my boys choose their life… choose your expression, choose what you’re into, choose your sexuality, choose whatever… you have my promise forever to love you and accept you no matter what life you choose.”
It feels like a joyous and genuine moment, so try and fight off natural cynicism and enjoy a little sweetness.
