CNN Revealed The Oregon Shooter’s Identity, And The Internet Is Upset

On Friday morning, CNN continued their coverage of the Oregon Community College shooting that left the nation reeling in the face of another tragedy. Yesterday evening, President Obama called for voters to demand changes in gun laws, while Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin refused to name the killer: “I will not give [the killer] the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act.”

In the above clip, CNN played footage of Hanlin’s statement before quickly changing course within a split second. CNN promptly revealed the shooter’s name, his age, his wardrobe, and further details of his personal history. All of this happened within 30 seconds. As the clip ended, the anchor highlighted a blog post from the shooter, in which he spoke of previous mass killers:

“I have noted that so many people like him are all alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are. A man who was known by no one is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems the more people you kill, the more you’re in the limelight.”

The Internet was understandably upset over the media hypocrisy displayed by CNN. A thread lit up on Reddit with this footage. Twitter was upset, as well, and called out CNN for glorifying the shooter and granting him the news coverage he so desired.
