Math nerds and science buffs the world over are celebrating Pi Day today, a most unusual (but tasty) of holidays celebrated every March 14th. (Here’s a non-nerd explainer for the uninitiated.) However, this year’s event was made even more unique by an alignment between the date (3/14/15) and the time (9:26). Added together, the numbers read out as 3.1415926 — the first eight numbers of Pi.

Too bad Neil deGrasse Tyson thinks we’re all a bit silly for celebrating at all. Why? I’ll let Neil take this one:

Only the United States and, to varying degrees, Canada use this Gregorian form of calendar dating. Everyone else writes the day first, which would portray today’s date as 14/3/15. Nothing Pi about that.

Naturally, Tyson’s tweet drew the kind of ire that only social media can produce. He granted one alternative position for a moment, but quickly shot it down:

Despite his Sheldon Cooper-ish approach to the nerdy holiday, Tyson eventually relented. How? By tweeting more trivia about Pi and Pi Day, that’s how:

He also threatened to do the impossible:

You still tried to ruin Pi Day, Neil. I’m just going to go and eat all these pies I made with my friends because (1) pies are delicious, and (2) AMERICA F*CK YEAH.

(Via Neil deGrasse Tyson)

Trolls gonna troll.

Wouldn’t Pi in base Pi be 1?

Nope. 10 in base 10 = 10, 16 in base 16 = 10, 2 in binary (base 2) is 10. Pi in base pi = 10. :)

@JD Ballard gotcha thanks

JD Ballard but you can’t translate from irrational base to rational base. Every number in the irrational base is irrational, besides, what would you “count up” from? So they can’t be equal to an irrational number. So a rational number base like 10 has its rules and it can be shown with x^2/x^2 =1 anything divided by itself equal to 1 and the same rules that let us cancel let us subtract exponents so you also get x^2/x^2 = x^(2-2)=x^0. So x^0 = 1. But that is a rule that makes sense in an integer based universe, not in an irrational based universe. No conversion between base 10 so even the pi=10 is based on using rules from one universe and applying them to another. So it is joke, if that is what the noted cultural incarnate of Sagan is implying with “get your geek on”, math humor. A rational number can’t be both rational and irrational. Dig?, or am I missing something half baked but smells good to me so far.

Sorry, but I just don’t like this guy. He’s the dude at the party who would correct a joke everyone just laughed at for scientific errors and suck all the air out of the room.

Being smart as fuck and constantly reminding everyone that you are is not as cool as just being smart as fuck.

I disagree completely. He is poking people who take things too seriously.

For example, why would anyone care what he thinks about religion? And yet everyone gets upset when he tweets anything about religious history.

People are too easily offended and upset, and I hope he keeps doing it because I like to fantasize that as a group, people will become less easily offended if he keeps doing it.

So you don’t like him because he makes you feel dumb.

@HuhSJ

No, I appreciate feeling dumb. I like learning stuff. It’s his WAY of going about it. “You guys are celebrating Pi Day? Let me tell you all the reasons that’s wrong.” He does this shit all the time.

Could be just me though. I find it grating.

@Mechakisc

I like it when the ultra-religious get riled up. I’m fine with that kinda stuff.

But why is anyone getting riled up about Pi day? Obi Wan was the wisest when he said that so many of the truths we cling to are only valid from a certain point of view.

God bless him.

I hadn’t heard of Pi day, at least it isn’t as dumb as the Star Wars crap every May 4th, It’s not now nor has it ever been as funny or clever as people seem to believe it to be.

The Fourth is not strong with this one.

I don’t think anyone really thinks it’s especially funny OR clever, it’s just a nice way to while away the time until we all rest in the ground. Who are you to stand above everyone else? Preach not from your ivory tower this day, sir.

We all know that Star Wars day is only celebrated by people with lisps.

Not preaching, just saying its a bit dumb, there are plenty of real holidays that are just as dumb, like Guy Fawkes day for instance, its a holiday to celebrate a failed terrorist who wanted to force his religion on people, it’d be like giving a holiday for those dudes that tried to blow up the Trade center with a van back in the 90s.

Revenge of the Fifth is far better.

Guy Fawkes day is not celebrating what he tried to do. It celebrates his failure. . It’s also a good excuse to have fireworks and eat burgers.

I think May the 4th is cute, but Pi Day is just dumb. “Hey this series of numbers looks like another number, AWESOME!”

I don’t know anyone that actually ‘celebrates’ pi day. No one I know on 13March gets excited about eating pies the next day. It seems to be more like a hey im an idiot look at me on facebook thing more’n anything else.

Just for that, I’m going to keep calling Pluto a planet.

If you think he’s being serious, you should listen to his podcast StarTalk Radio, you will quickly find out just how much of a jokester he really is.

but this is America and we do write the day like that, so it is pi day

That’s what he said. It’s Pi day if you write the date like that.

Other countries have Twitter.

Thanks for a headline that misrepresents what NDT actually said. When a person with a mathematical mind says ” But only if you write the month first, the day second, and a two-decimal truncated year third. 03/14/15″ , he’s not saying that Americans are _wrong_ for doing so. Tyson is himself an American, right? The point is that it’s more “natural” to do day/month/year, since the month unit is intermediate to the day and the year. But it doesn’t really matter.

It’s nice to have the US as the only country that does month/day/year. That way it’s easy to tell when the CIA tries to plant evidence incriminating people from other countries when they screw up the date format. (Yes, they’ve actually done that.)

I’d suffer a hundred pi days if it spared me just one Talk Like a Pirate Day.

First he ruins Pluto, now PI Day, what’s next, Neil, Xmas?

Oh yeah, I forgot, I think he did try to ruin Christmas by claiming it was also someone else’s birthday. I’m a fan, Neil, but why do you hate American holidays?

If you wanna do date first then month go with July 22nd. 22 divided by 7 is approximately pi.

If you say the date out loud everyone starts with the month. Why write it differently?

Only in America.

When American movie trailers come on here in the UK that haven’t been localised they sound so strange when announcing the release date! To my ears “the 15th of March” sounds like the 15th day in March, whereas “March 15th” sounds like the 15th March there’s ever been.

With his tongue in cheek, I love Neil’s commentary! And for the uninitiated, Pi Day is fun to celebrate in Math classes, where Test Prep may be pre-empted for a day with pies and fun math activities!

Only in America.

Neil is overrated and any scientist who mocks other scientists is a joke themselves. What a douche.

The day first method is not necessarily ideal either. I like the way the U.S. military does it: year month day. By that method, today is 20150314.

We don’t count up to pi like with counting number base like 10, with 8,9,then 10 or whatever a comparison contrived in that way, different worlds, that’s what I’m asking and NdGT gives one of two more than just trivial, fake, equations that appeal to our rules of exponents with counting number base not pi base. Base pi numbers don’t make sense the same way as whole number base numbers, that’s what I’m saying, what do you haters think?

the other one is pi^0 = 1 and that is also contrived based on our notion of base 10 (or whatever whole number) base arithmetic rules, not base pi rules, so trivial and fake. And a fun thought, thanks NdGT, am I missing something?

Can he, or anyone, give another equation that makes sense, other than in base pi pi=10 or pi^0=1 that makes sense? What I’m sayin by trivial and fake too different universes.

I guess in base pi 63pi = 25(2)pi+5(2)pi+3(pi^0) but you can’t express the base 10 number 263 in terms of base pi so they’re different worlds, different domains, too much strangeness.

Naw, think the above equation is missing something and not true but doesn’t matter different domains different rules we don’t count up to pi like in counting number bases he gives one of two fake equations and they’re fake because based on rules in another universe though true equations exist, I just didn’t write one above but this is all can think about for now on the topic.

He started out awesomely, but our man is becoming annoying. Most of what he talks about now goes in the “who gives a shit” logs. He needs to drop a unforseen science bomb on our asses.

Naw Mag he is cool bringing up these things pi in base pi=10 isn’t an unforseen science bomb? It is to me.

@Jeff Daniel I just want him to drop something huge like “Guess what, niggas? The sky ain’t blue! ” or “hey the earth’s core has a fucking brain controlling it! ” something to shock the world. Fuck Pi day….

What I am saying in the above is pi in base pi is not equal to 10. It is moot in the pi universe, am I right? So now I’m disagreeing that NdGT gave all the digits of pi.

Any NdGT fans who are haters and wanna argue that he is right?

Yeah, he’s right that people are too serious.

We count now using base 10, right? that’s how it is referred to? So base Pi is 10, sure, why not.

But it’s a joke, man. He posted it to twitter, not a peer reviewed journal.

He can celebrate in Europe on 22/7

Since The Melody of Pi is in base 12 (played in the 12 tones) I think it should be on March 18th.

I love how offended and sensitive people get about Neil

Using Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s method, you can’t have a PI-day since there is no month with the numeric equivalent of 14 – 03/14/15 equalling the 3rd day of the 14th(!) month of the 15th year. If there were a 14th month, the last PI-day would have occurred on the 3rd day of Month 14 in the year 15 CE (the emperor Tiberius would have been in a celebratory mood). So, no PI-day, and we can all breathe easier.

I believe Mr. Tyson is feeling like people are not paying enough attention to him and he can’t get another appearance on The Daily Show…

i thought for sure he was going to say round up due to sig figs or some dumb shit. this was even more lame.
