Soon You’ll Finally Be Able To Give Your Friends The Middle Finger Via Emoji

Hooray! New emojis are almost upon us!  Yesterday The Unicode Consortium announced version 7.0 of the Unicode Standard, which will see the inclusion of approximately 250 new emojis as soon as July — including a much needed middle finger emoji. The Emojinalysis guy is about to have a LOT more work on his hands, that’s for sure.

But when will we actually see the new emojis on our mobile devices? According to The Guardian:

It is likely that some manufacturers will make the most of the update to fix other long-standing issues with emoji. In March, Apple apologised for only having two non-white faces in its implementation of the characters, and promised to include more in a future update, after a petition pointed out the lack of people of colour in the company’s default set.

“Of the more than 800 emojis, the only two resembling people of colour are a guy who looks vaguely Asian and another in a turban,” the petition argued. “There’s a white boy, girl, man, woman, elderly man, elderly woman, blond boy, blonde girl, and, we’re pretty sure, Princess Peach. But when it comes to faces outside of yellow smileys, there’s a staggering lack of minority representation.”

So it seems, at least for Apple, they’ll be rushing to get an update out ASAP once the new versions are available. Via the emojipedia website, which has been crashing all morning due to I’m sure the crazy influx of traffic, here’s some of the new emojis you can expect, in addition to the middle finger:

  • Hot Pepper
  • Admission Tickets
  • Sports Medal
  • Cityscape
  • Stadium
  • Chipmunk
  • Black Skull And Crossbones
  • Man In Business Suit Levitating [Ed note: Finally???]
  • Sleuth Or Spy
  • Spider Web
  • Joystick
  • Wastebasket

Noticeably absent is a hot dog emoji, which means that this poor lady’s life’s work has gone unnoticed.
