Two Years After Her Death, A Wife Gave Her Husband And His Fiancée A Surprise Gift

Two years ago, Brenda Schmitz, a mother of four, wrote a letter to Star 102.5 in Des Moines, Iowa. It was for their “Christmas Wish” program, and Brenda had a request: she was going to die from ovarian cancer soon, but she didn’t want her husband, David, to feel guilty about remarrying. Thing is, she never sent the letter; she gave it to her friend to send to Star 102.5 should David ever find someone. He did, and they got an amazing Christmas present.

Dated Aug. 3, 2011, Brenda Schmitz’s letter lists three wishes.

“I have a wish for David and the boys and the woman and her family if she has kids also,” she wrote. “I want them to know I love them very much and they always feel safe in a world of pain.” David and Brenda had four sons: Carter, Josh, Justin and Max.

Station officials told David Schmitz on Thursday that they were granting a Christmas Wish for him. But he didn’t know about Brenda’s letter until he was in the studio and on the air.

Her three wishes: 1) “For something that would pamper David’s new partner (Jane, to whom David proposed this past summer),” 2) a magical trip, somewhere where “they all can enjoy their company and companionship as a family,” and 3) a “night out full of drinks, food, and fun” for the doctors and nurses at Mercy Medical Center, where she was a patient. All three of Brenda’s wishes will be granted, with sponsorship help.

So this is what it’s like to feel things.
