Tim Duncan, also known as the greatest power forward in the history of the NBA, appears to be just as steady and consistent off the court as he was on it. We probably knew this before. But we can be certain of it now, if former teammate Bruce Bowen is to be believed.
Bowen, in Rio for the Olympics with NBA House, told SI.com that even President Obama couldn’t get Duncan to agree to fly down to Brazil wth him to cheer on Team USA. And why? “He was like, ‘You know I’m not about that stuff.'” Preach, Bruce.
“Tim, his legacy is always going to be more of the foundation guy in San Antonio and a guy that wasn’t ever concerned with the limelight. But more importantly concerned with others, making sure that they could really reach the most out of their potential. It’s not often you find individuals like that. And it’s funny that he was offered an opportunity to fly here with the President of the United States, and he discussed it with me and I’m like, ‘You’re going, right?’ He was like, ‘You know I’m not about that stuff.’ Even that moment where you’d say, ‘I sure would like to be a part of that,’ it doesn’t happen with Tim because he’s not concerned with that stuff.”
Duncan, humble as ever, equates accompanying the President of the United States to the Olympics to “that stuff.” We’re not talking about, say, walking the red carpet at some awards show or making a cameo in the next Drake video. We’re talking about, again, accompanying the President of the United States to the Olympics.
But hey, Timmy’s gotta do Timmy. And that’s just one reason why he’s one of the greatest basketball players there ever was.
