We like to think we’re pretty open-minded when it comes to crazy food innovations and Instagramable trends. We can’t deny the allure of Willy Wonka burgers and Whopperitos because food can be fun and delicious. But Oozefest is testing our mettle on this very issue. The festival’s concern is all things cheese. We can get behind that too. Cafe Calacas’ Chorizo Queso Fundido Doughnut may have taken it all too far. The doughnut you see above is the sweet treat you can savor while we look on, horrified.
Look at it. Look at it:

A perfectly cromulent doughnut has been slathered in chorizo-filled queso fundido. We’re not necessarily averse to the blending of sweet and savory, yet there’s something about the salaciousness of the melting — oozing if you will — queso engulfing the pastry underneath it. It’s everywhere!
A couple messy scenarios come to mind if one indulges in this: First queso, even the latin fondue kind like we see here, is meant for dipping and therefore saving the person enjoying it a sizable post-cheese gorging mess. Second, has anyone ever ordered some queso — or even fondue — and thought, ‘you know what would make this awesome? Glazed doughnuts!’ It seems very decadent in way that screams for you to eat it under a cloth like one would an Ortolan so as to hide your shame and ecstasy from both god and any onlookers.
Maybe we’re wrong, it might be mind-blowing. Cafe Calacas is hoping so. If it makes the cut at Oozefest this weekend, they’ll be putting it on their menu.
