Tom Hanks would be the last person you’d expect to be a Trump supporter, especially with his opening SNL monologue as America’s dad. The sweater and everything, like a real Mr. Rogers that’s lecturing America on its weed use and horrible nature. But then he pulls out a real true Trump supporter in the first sketch of the night, ‘Black Jeopardy.’ It would seem like the entire thing is set for disaster with plenty of hate, but that’d likely be boring. Instead, we get to see the surprising side of Doug the Trump supporter and find out that he would get along pretty well with our fearless host. At least until the final question.
It’s not over the top and Kenan Thompson definitely gets another chance to shine, but it was definitely a nice way to jump into the show because you’re not getting what you’re expecting. There is definitely one way this sketch could’ve gone and they avoided that, moving to a better run with a better payoff.
It was indeed fun while it lasted and it’s always nice to see Hanks toss on an old fake beard. It makes you think that Forrest Gump might’ve made it to this era and he’s now just a simplistic Trump supporter who enjoys a nice red hat. You know it all could be true.
