Contract negotiations between the champions and their star restricted free agent certainly weren’t broken off for long. According to Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports, Draymond Green has agreed to terms on a five-year, $85 million contract with the Golden State Warriors.

This news comes mere hours after a report emerged that the First Team All-Defense honoree had tabled talks with Golden State’s front office brass. Despite that apparent friction, the Warriors were never in any serious danger of losing Green because the team possessed the right to match any competing offer sheet he could have signed.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the 2012 second-round pick. A preseason injury to incumbent power forward David Lee is what originally gave him a spot in the starting lineup, and it’s one Green won’t be relinquishing anytime soon. As the fulcrum from which the Warriors’ league-leading defense swings and an ever-valuable playmaking power forward, he’s been entrenched as a key cog for Steve Kerr’s squad since last fall. And now that his long-term future in the Bay is all but officially secure, Green is not only poised to become a full-fledged star, but also help Golden State compete at the highest level for many years to come.

Congratulations, Draymond!
