Ty Lawson has unfortunately added another entry to his growing compendium of off-court incidents. The Denver Nuggets’ point guard was arrested early Tuesday morning in Los Angeles on suspicion of drunk driving. It was his second DUI arrest in the past six months, following a January arrest in Denver when he was reportedly stopped for doing 65 in a 35 mph zone, then refused to submit to chemical testing. A stipulation of his bond agreement on that charge was that he would abstain from alcohol.
On Friday, a judge ordered him to submit to ongoing alcohol monitoring, and Lawson’s attorney subsequently announced that he would enter a month-long rehabilitation program at a posh Malibu facility. The judge also ordered that Lawson will be subject to alcohol monitoring even after he completes the program. Here’s more from Jesse Paul of The Denver Post:
“Lawson’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, said in court Lawson on Saturday will enter a 30-day intensive residential program that will ‘ensure his sobriety.’
Lawson, who did not speak at Friday’s brief hearing, is going to Cliffside Malibu, a luxury rehab center in Malibu, Calif., prosecutors confirmed.
Judge Doris Burd said the court wants verification Lawson enters the program. She ordered Lawson to use a device that tests for alcohol use after he returns from rehab.”
Lawson has been the subject of trade rumors lately, which were exacerbated on Draft night last month when he posted a video of himself smoking a hookah and bemoaning the Nuggets’ pick, Emmanual Mudiay, who is arguably the best point guard of this year’s draft class and presumably Lawson’s eventual replacement. However, potential trade suitors could be wary, given all of his extracurricular activities as of late.
