Draymond Green racked up 11 technical fouls last season, good for sixth in the NBA. That’s a total of $25,000 Green cost himself, which is a considerable amount for a player on a paltry (by NBA standards) second-round contract. Green’s going to be smarter this season, though. Oh, don’t worry, he’s not going to change his loudmouth ways; he’s just going to change how he deals with the aftermath of receiving a tech.
According to KNBR 680-AM, Green, in anticipation of any technical fouls levied against him this season, has set aside a fund to pay for fines that go along with them (hat tip to CSNBayArea.com for the transcription and context).
After signing a 5-year, $82 million extension this offseason, did Draymond put money aside for the 2015-16 season, anticipating future technicals?
“Definitely,” he said. “The mark of a good financial team is knowing … you really have to know who you’re dealing with. And you know, there’s a little bit of money set aside in the budget for technical fouls (laughter) … part of planning.”
How much?
“Couple hundred bucks (laughs). Just a couple hundred bucks. Nothing too extravagant.”
Green got called for a technical in the Warriors’ opener, so that fund is already paying dividends. Obviously, no player wants to lose money, but seeing as how Green just signed that massive extension, technical fouls aren’t going to put as much of a dent in his wallet as they once did. It’s a shrewd budgeting move on Green’s part, and one has to wonder whether Rasheed Wallace ever though of doing such a thing.
