This free agency period has been a time of crazy contracts, league-altering moves, and, perhaps above all else, Twitter firestorms. Left and right, NBA players have tweeted things, cryptic or otherwise, that have blown up all over the internet. Now, Carmelo Anthony has joined the ranks of players who have attracted a lot of attention for a tweet, and it is a decidedly enigmatic one to boot.
The tweet reads “Surround yourself with people that make you smile #Brotherhood @KingJames #StayMe7o.” It also features a looping video of Carmelo and LeBron James laughing and having a good time while on Team USA together. Leaving aside the “StayMe7o” hashtag that’s become part of the Anthony #brand, the tweet is quite interesting, mostly because of its ambiguity.
Melo is under contract with the New York Knicks, a team that has made a lot of moves this offseason to try and improve the team around him. He’s the cornerstone of the franchise. Meanwhile, LeBron is in Cleveland, where he just led the Cavaliers to their first title. Yet, there was talk this offseason of “Team Banana Boat” becoming a reality. Anthony seems to be reaching out to LeBron to some degree in this tweet. Is it about free agency? Is it about wanting to join forces with James on an NBA team?
Unless Carmelo clarifies his tweet, the world will keep parsing it for meaning. The tweet has blown up, so obviously people are interested. In an NBA where Kevin Durant is now a Golden State Warrior, anything seems possible.
