After Team USA’s disastrous bronze-medal finish at the 2004 Summer Olympics, they installed Mike Krzyzewski, known as Coach K for convenience’s sake, as head coach. Since then, the Americans have won two golds, and Coach K is back to try and coach his team to another gold medal this summer. While the team is loaded with talent and prohibitive favorites to win gold, the Duke University legend isn’t quite taking it easy on his players during the lead up to Rio – as Kyrie Irving learned the hard way at a recent practice.
The team is currently in Las Vegas preparing for the Games. Irving, who briefly played under Coach K at Duke, was apparently not taking things seriously as the team was running through basic drills. Since NBA TV was in attendance during Team USA’s training session, we got the pleasure of overhearing Krzyzewski’s reaction to Irving’s amusement.
Sure, it’s a funny moment to be caught on camera, and on mic, but it’s not a big deal. This was surely not the first time Coach K swore at one of Team USA’s players, and it won’t be the last. Coaching what is essentially an All-Star team is a balancing act. There are a lot of big personalities who are used to running the show, and you want to let them have fun, but you’ve also got to get them to be serious when need be. That’s when you tell them to f*ck off.
And if you’re Coach K, you can definitely away with it.
