Every sports story is actually a Floyd Mayweather story. When Isaiah Thomas put together an inspiring 53-point performance against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night, for example, Mayweather made headlines on Wednesday for how much money he made betting on the game.
Now he officially wants a part of the NBA action.
Mayweather posted on Instagram on Thursday, telling the world he met with Magic Johnson and is now inspired to join the ranks of NBA owners.
“It’s about time for me to buy an NBA team,” Mayweather wrote. “If you’re ready to sell your NBA team, please get in touch with me.”
I’m not sure if buying an NBA team is as easy as turning your Instagram comments into a classified ad, but I’ve also never been a very wealthy celebrity athlete.
I’m also not sure if the league would look too kindly on an owner who publicly flaunts the fact that he’s gambling on the proceedings of NBA games but that’s something Adam Silver would have to parse out.
There’s also the problem of money. Mayweather is worth around $340 million, while even the least valuable NBA franchise—the New Orleans Pelicans—is estimated to be worth $640 million. That means Mayweather would need to put together an ownership group, and it’s unlikely he’s even the largest shareholder. Might not be worth his trouble, really.
What Mayweather fans really want is a long-awaited fight against Connor McGregor, which Mayweather is focusing on much more than his potential prospects as an NBA owner.
