There is something terrifying about Giannis Antetokounmpo. It’s not just his alien measurements or ridiculous athleticism, it’s the fact that he keeps evolving as a basketball player. This is expected of all young players replete with potential, but with Giannis, his evolution seems to happen at warp speed.
Take, for example, this spin move and dunk. The dunk itself is impressive, especially since it’s the first time he’s performed such a slam, but it’s the spin move that’s of concern here, because it’s a move Giannis hasn’t shown it before. It’s a new weapon in his arsenal that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. What’s more, he executes it with such fluidity and grace that, if you’d never watched him play before this game, you’d think it was a move he used all the time. If it can become part of his every day game, he’ll be even more dangerous on the court than we thought.
Last year, Giannis’s hype greatly outweighed his actual production. Because of how fun he was, it was easy to forget that he wasn’t actually all that good. This year is a completely different story. The hype is still there – it’s actually increased – but this time it’s deserved. He’s still only scratching the surface of what he could be, but he is at least, finally, a legitimately good basketball player.
