The Golden State Warriors staved off elimination three times to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, and moved one step closer to capping off arguably the best season in NBA history. The Warriors are just the 10th team out of 233 all time to win a series after trailing 3-1, and the first to do so in a Conference Finals since the Boston Celtics in 1980.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Warriors also set a few impressive records along the way.
• Steph Curry had 98 points over Games 5, 6 and 7, the most by any player on a team that has won after trailing 3-1 in the series. The previous record was held by Chauncey Billups, who had 92 points when the Detroit Pistons rallied to beat the Orlando Magic in 2003. This is a cool record because it just made you go, “Chauncey Billups! I remember that guy!”
• The Warriors became the first team to win Games 6 and 7 of any series when trailing by at least 10 in both games since 2000. That means the Thunder are the first team in 16 years to blow games in that position, so there’s a smidgen of choking here, which is always necessary in situations like this.
• Curry (30) and Klay Thompson (32) are the first players to hit at least 30 3-pointers in a series, breaking the previous record of 28 held by Dennis Scott, Ray Allen and Thompson last year for the Warriors. The team’s 91 3-pointers are 12 more than the previous record held by the Atlanta Hawks from 2014.
The Warriors will have another chance to set a bunch of records in the Finals when they play the Cavs again. But the real surprise here is Steven Adams did not tie or set a record for most times assaulted during a seven-game series. Someone who played against Dennis Rodman in the ’90s must own that mark.
