The Patriots may have lost Rob Gronkowski for the rest of the season due to a back injury, but Pats fans can rest assured that they don’t have to go months on end without getting a taste of Gronk’s ridiculous behavior now that John Cena has proven he makes an amazing Gronk substitute. Based on a game show sketch on this week’s Saturday Night Live, Cena could even make a second career out of being a Gronk impersonator. He nails exactly the way Gronk laughs and slaps his hands together while he talks that it almost felt like the TE was in Studio 8H instead of home on IR.
Not only did it feel like Gronk was actually in the building, but the audience also got treated to Kenan’s Charles Barkley impression as the host of new game show “Where’d Your Money Go?” The sketch is exactly what it sounds like, as Barkley tries to teach pro athletes financial planning so they don’t blow all their money like he did (why else would he be hosting a game show?!). Cena’s Gronk admits to dropping a bunch of money each year on “Gronk’s Party Ship” during which he and his brothers do a bunch of lemon drop shots and get to wear crazy oversized sunglasses. That’s not even a spoof on outrageous athlete spending, that’s legitimately Gronk’s life. The Pats fan base doesn’t just love him because of all of those touchdowns — although that certainly helps — and Cena perfectly nails the euphoria of living that kind of goofball, 24/7 partying lifestyle.
The sketch also features a pretty terrible Connor McGregor impressions in which the MMA fighter insists he’s not going broke and makes a Roth IRA/Irish Republican Army joke, as well as Bobby Moynihan’s always-aces appearance as golfer John Daly. The gameshow within the sketch is basically a twist on normal Jeopardy, so watch the full sketch above to how each athlete lost or will lose the bulk of his money. The categories are I Spent It, I Sniffed It, or She Took It, so really any of those could apply to each of the celebrity participants. No athlete is completely immune to the temptations of being world famous, but there definitely should have been a “Spent it all on blow up animals and Jell-O shots for pool parties” option for Gronk. Otherwise it’s just inaccurate!
Having a cheetah that wears sunglasses and eats Cheetos does sound great, though, that’s one thing everyone can agree on.
