The Wizards aren’t quite ready to go home for the summer. With their backs against the wall in Game 6, Washington put together a last-second victory on the strength of a John Wall game-winner with three seconds to go.
Moments before Wall kept his team alive with an unlikely connection from 26 feet away, it briefly looked as if the Boston Celtics would be able to slam the door on the Eastern Conference Semifinals. In fact, it was Al Horford who connected on a contested bank shot with 7.7 seconds to go, and after the make, Washington trailed by a 91-89 margin.
When speaking to ESPN’s Lisa Salters following the game, Wall exclaimed, “I ain’t going home. Don’t come to my city wearing all black saying it’s a funeral.” For reference, the Celtics not-so-subtly wore all-black to the arena with the chance to send Washington packing for good, but Wall’s final bucket of the game ended any notion of a funeral prior to Game 7.
The series will shift back to Boston for the always entertaining Game 7, and with that as the backdrop, the No. 1 seed Celtics should probably be considered a small favorite. On Friday night, however, John Wall and company did just enough to win, and it was a memorable finish to extend their season.
