We’re only a few days into the post-Kevin Garnett era in the NBA, but as it turns out, The Big Ticket may not be out of basketball for too long. According to multiple reports, Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue reached out to Garnett and offered him a role on the Cavaliers’ coaching staff. The best part? It sounds like KG is interested in taking the deal.
Lue said he has discussed a position on his staff with Garnett, the 15-time All-Star who recently retired after 21 seasons in the NBA.
“I talked to him about it. I know his wife is pushing for it a lot,” Lue said following practice Thursday. “Brandi is pushing for it, trying to get him to come and coach. He says he’s not ready yet. He goes back, `I might do it,’ but he’s back and forth. We’ll see. But I’d definitely make a spot for him if he wanted to come back and coach.”
A few dudes have made the transition from player to coach soon after their retirement, but going right to the bench as an assistant coach would be a really great fit for Garnett, who has been revered for his basketball smarts ever since he first came into the NBA. Plus as we saw on Thursday afternoon, Garnett is already working on his coaching chops.

Getting Garnett could be a really fun move for the Cavs, especially if they manage to pull in the other former star to whom Lue has offered an assistant coaching gig. Lue reportedly reached out to Allen Iverson about a job on the team’s bench earlier this month, and while we’re not sure how serious he was about this, getting KG and AI on board as assistant coaches would easily make the Cavaliers the coolest team in the NBA. At the very least, Cleveland would have the best 1-2 punch in a hypothetical NBA Jam game among all assistant coaches.
