Lonzo Ball is a projected top-3 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft and has the most talked about sneaker release of the year — for better or worse — with the outrageously priced $495 ZO2 Prime from Big Baller Brand, his family’s apparel company. These are things we knew about Ball, but unlike his father, the eldest hooping Ball brother isn’t known for his boisterous personality or things he says.
We mostly know about Lonzo from what LaVar Ball says and what we get to see on film from his days at UCLA and Chino Hills High School. However, Ball is finding his voice as he prepares to enter the NBA.
He led the video release for the ZO2, explaining his journey to this point and creating his own shoe, and now he’s also dropping remixes of Drake songs on Soundcloud.
To his credit, this is far better than I expected it to be when I saw that Lonzo Ball rapping. A lot of athletes think they have mic skills and don’t have friends willing to tell them they don’t. However, Ball is actually pretty good and has some flow. He’s not an especially charismatic dude, but the confidence in himself that’s apparent on the basketball court comes out a little bit in his rhymes.
He also gets that BBB plug in and gave a nod to his status with self-owned apparel company with the line, “I be ballin’ like I’m sponsored.” All in all, Lonzo has some skills and this is nowhere near the worst athlete rap offering we’ve seen.
