The first pitch is a time-tested tradition in baseball, and Michael Carter-Williams finally got his turn to take part in it as he threw out the opening pitch for the Milwaukee Brewers. As you can tell by the video above, it did not go well. It did not go well at all. To be fair to the former Rookie of the Year, throwing a ball from the pitching mound to the catcher isn’t as easy as it looks (and it does look really easy on TV). It takes more strength, more accuracy, more arch than one would predict. Countless NBA players and other professional athletes have botched this seemingly straightforward task.
And yet, this might be one of the worst. We’ll start with the good, or at least what’s good in comparison to the rest of the pitch, which is all very bad. MCW actually got it to the plate. That’s an accomplishment! Some people don’t even make it that far. Distance aside, the rest is a disaster. The pitch is way too high. If this were an actual game, that would clearly be a ball, and if there were a runner on third, he might have the opportunity to steal home. If it were a right-handed batter, he might have been plunked right in the head.
Speaking of where that ball was heading, it was not, unfortunately, to the catcher. Instead, it headed straight for the poor, unsuspecting cameraman. He was lucky to have that giant camera in the way, otherwise, he could sustain, like, a bruise or something. Get some practice in next time, MCW. You’ll feel better, and so will the cameraman.
