Some surprising news hit campus this morning: North Carolina junior point guard Larry Drew II will transfer from the university, Coach Roy Williams announced Friday.
“This morning, around 9 o’clock, I got a message to call big Larry,” said Williams at his Friday press conference in reference to Drew’s father, the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. “At that point he informed me Larry was leaving, and we had a long discussion, most of which should be kept private.”
Drew had recently lost his starting spot to freshman Kendall Marshall, but had his best game of the season Wednesday against Boston College, dishing out nine assists to just one turnover.
“The last four games, Larry’s been great,” said Williams. “His assist-to-turnover ratio was 19-to-4, and he was the defensive player of the game in two of those games. It’s a big blow to our team.”
Williams said he hadn’t spoken to Drew, who practiced with the team yesterday, and was stunned by the decision.
Drew is the fourth North Carolina player from California to transfer in the last three years including Alex Stepheson, David Wear and Travis Wear).
In a statement, Drew said: “I’d like to thank the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play at one of the nation’s top college in UNC, and my teammates for their support as well. It is unfortunate my career didn’t meet expectations in Chapel Hill. However, I do look forward to continuing my collegiate and athletic career in the near future.”
