The NBA Draft is a wildly entertaining affair. Not just because the league’s 30 teams come away from basketball’s premier job fair with an influx of exciting young talent, but also due to the attire worn by the future millionaires in attendance.
Who could forget LeBron James donning an all-white suit to his draft night back in 2003?
Joakim Noah upped his suit and bow-tie game with a hair and smile game that was even more outrageous a few years later.
And just last year, Willie Cauley-Stein won the award for most trill with a spotted blue bow tie and chain and medallion straight from the early 2000s.
The 2016 draft class, unfortunately, dressed decidedly down in comparison to their zanier counterparts of previous years. Something about a fitted suit or jacket featured muted colors and feint patterns is both timeless and a sign of the times, right?
But that’s not to say there weren’t a few standout fashion statements from the league’s new rookies on Thursday at Barclays Center. Take No. 20 overall pick Caris LeVert, for example. Only a former Michigan Wolverine could get away with wearing something like this.
Newest Laker Brandon Ingram wore an ultra-slim jacket that closely resembles the concrete slabs of downtown Los Angeles.
Surprise lottery pick Thon Maker rocked a dark-hewed magenta suit that made him look like the living embodiment of hell’s Gumby. We actually like the look, by the way.
But the winner – or loser, depending on how you look at it – of the draft’s fashion show was clearly Kris Dunn. Not only did the Minnesota Timberwolves’ new floor general stitch his high-school jersey into his jacket, but he also wore a bedazzled pair of shoes that may or may not have featured spikes on the back.
Back to the suit, though: Did we mention it’s J.C. Penney?
If Kris Dunn wasn’t your favorite rookie before, basically, he definitely should be now.
