Only three days left, three days before your chance to own one of the most legendary sneakers ever released could disappear. A week ago today, we told y’all about the release of the Nike MAG, the mythical sneaker worn in Back to the Future Part II by Marty McFly and how 1,500 pairs would be auctioned off on eBay with proceeds to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research. Now with less than three days remaining and that number dwindling, it’s put up or shut up time for collectors.
For the launch of the auction last Thursday, Nike put together a 1980s-themed party at Los Angeles’ Hollywood’s Montalban theater. Sneaker freaks, Nike execs and many others from all over the world came through to see the DeLorean time machine (parked outside) and the once-in-a-generation sneaker (lit up inside). Once there, the auction was started and the first pair of Nike MAGs, which will be personally signed by Michael J. Fox, brought in $37,500 in only eight minutes!
Legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield was on hand to talk about the production of the shoe and how it was difficult to keep the real thing looking like the pairs seen in the movie. Realism is everything. But still, they had to make sacrifices. For instance, in the movie, Fox wore a battery pack with wires running down his pants to light the shoe. Now with the current technology, the Nike MAG can stay lit up for five hours.
It doesn’t get better than combining a famous shoe and a good cause. Now, will you be one of the lucky few who can get your hands on a pair before they vanish?
What do you think?
