Kevin Durant’s abrupt departure from the Oklahoma City Thunder wounded a lot of people. He was the premiere star of the franchise, and he left for their biggest rival, dynamiting the Thunder’s title chances in the process. It’s understandable that Russell Westbrook, KD’s main running mate in OKC, would be mad, and it’s understandable that the two aren’t talking. But he expressed his resentment earlier than any of us thought.
Of course, we know that Russ is not the kind of guy to open up about his emotions, especially if he’s been hurt. But on July 4th, right after KD announced his decision to head for Golden State, Westbrook posted a picture of cupcakes on his Instagram.

According to Sports Illustrated‘s Lee Jenkins, that was a veiled shot at Durant, using a term the duo often labeled others they determined unworthy.
Westbrook didn’t disparage Durant. He didn’t judge him. All he did was take a picture. When Kendrick Perkins played center for the Thunder, he called teammates “cupcake” if he thought they were acting a little soft. Westbrook and Durant adopted the term in jest. Westbrook posted a bittersweet pic on Instagram: three plates of cupcakes topped by red and blue stars and sprinkles.
Remember to mark your calendars for November 3rd, the date of the first Warriors-Thunder game, if only to see the kind of cold-blooded stare Russ locks onto Durant with. He might go for 60 points.
