Steph Curry is set to be a free agent in 2017, and will likely be courted by every team in the NBA that harbors even the slightest hope of landing the reigning MVP. Unfortunately, Curry has some bad news for those teams. As he tells Jimmy Spencer of Sporting News, Curry really isn’t interested in free agency.
“As I am thinking right now, free agency isn’t really appealing to me because I love where I’m at, love the organization I’m playing for, and the Bay Area is home for me and my family,” Curry said.
This is obviously terrific for both the Warriors and their fans, but even though Curry says he’ll be back, it’s still best to be just a little bit skeptical.
This isn’t the first time an upcoming free agent has said he’ll stay with his current team, and if Curry chooses to leave after all, it won’t be the first time a free agent has gone back on his word. Two years is still a long way away, and anything can happen. There’s also Curry’s injury history to remember. While he didn’t have any issues this season (thanks to a new workout regimen), Curry still has a history of ankle injuries. Hopefully those are in the past, but again, anything can happen.
Then again, really, there’s no reason for Curry to leave. The Warriors in 2017 won’t look that much different from the Warriors of today, so why would he leave a perennial contender? It’s healthy to be a little cynical, even of a golden boy such as Curry. But it’s pretty hard to see him leaving what is undoubtedly the best situation for him.
