People of L.A., meet your new $64 Million man #Lakers #NBAFreeAgency pic.twitter.com/q9f7bNKpzV

Say what now? We warned you that some odd names were going to sign contracts that seemed way too high. But with all of NBA Twitter salivating over the first free agency deal early Friday morning, the first free player to come to terms was..Timofey Mozgov? Not only was Cleveland’s big man signed, but it was the Lakers who did it, and — holy hell — they’re paying him $64 million over four years!
There were some, Ken Berger from CBS Sports and David Aldridge of NBA.com, who seemed to think Mozgov’s deal fell in line with our earlier assessment about the larger-than-expected dollar amounts after the cap jumped from $70 million in 2015-16 to an estimated $94 million this season. (Remember, the moratorium is the period where the NBA adds up the Basketball-Related Income — a.k.a. as BRI — to determine the cap for next season).
Well, as you might expect, Twitter, so anxious for the wheeling and dealing to begin, had a field day with the news.
Timofey Mozgov (6 points, 4 rebounds/game) just got more guaranteed money than every single NFL QB. https://t.co/7dw3UGcstX

Well, congrats to the #Lakers for winning the Timofey Mozgov sweepstakes

Mozgov scored 15 points in the playoffs.. He'll make $16 million dollars a year.. NBA Free Agency

Timofey Mozgov will be paid way more than Stephen Curry in the 2016-17 season.
Let that sink in.

I really enjoyed Timofey Mozgov's performance in Veep

The money is silly. But also, honestly, what are you even doing on the phone will Timofey Mozgov tonight?

Derrick Favors, Utah’s underrated power forward who won’t be a free agent until the summer of 2018, and who will make millions less than Mozgov over the final two years of his deal, only had an emoji reaction:

Plus, the fit with what the Lakers are trying to do is another head-scratcher:

Our own Sean Highkin knew just what to do:

And, of course, this is the Lakers. They’re so easy to simultaneously mock and loathe.

But you didn’t have to bring poor Roy Hibbert into it!
Guys….Roy Hibbert is about 5 months younger than Timofey Mozgov. BWAHAHAHAHAHA

Yeah, this is more our style, which makes sense because Alex Steven LeBron is one of our former guys, too (we’re everywhere).

This is somewhat irresponsible, as is the comparison to Steph Curry’s $11 million-a-year deal and the Derrick Favors reaction we added. That’s because the cap hike makes this deal at least a little easier to digest.
Timofey Mozgov annual salary = John Wall annual salary.
— Tim Reynolds (@ByTimReynolds) July 1, 2016
But why the hell did they do it first thing, and why lock up a center with one half season performing as a legit starter to a four-year deal?
Who cares. Bring on more jokes.
Surely Kevin Durant will meet with the Lakers now that they’ve secured Timofey Mozgov.

When you were laughing at the Kings for having 10 big men but then you see Mozgov and Noah eating your cap space. pic.twitter.com/E1tCyqQKHw

Oh, Pau was open to coming back? Come on now, Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak.
To put even more perspective on Lakers choice on Mozgov. Been told door was open on Pau's side for a return.

Dear All Other NBA Fans,
At least your team didn't sign Mozgov to 4 yrs/$64million.
Love,

Lakers only saw the celebrations, not the games. Hence the Mozgov mvp-like contract.

SI‘s Ben Golliver might’ve had the most staggering, somewhat-more-quantitative reaction, by the way.
By Offensive Real-Plus Minus, Lakers upgrade from Roy Hibbert (76th out of 76 centers) to Timofey Mozgov (75th)… pic.twitter.com/2Q2XsQXYC3

True.
[6 Hours Earlier]
Presti: Wait, tell 'em you really want to play w/ Mozgov.
KD: Oh come on, they'd never fall for that, right?— not matt (@PanasonicDX4500) July 1, 2016
VERY true.

What the hell were the Lakers thinking?
